What is Telegram?

Telegram CEO Arrested in France;

Durov was arrested in Paris by French authorities after there were allegations that his platform was being used for money laundering, drug trafficking, and child pornography. Additionally, there are allegations that the platforms did not share information with the authorities. 

AFP reports that Durov’s arrest was ordered by OFMIN, a French agency focused on preventing violence against minors. This arrest, as per reports, is a part of a larger investigation into charges of “complicity.” 

After landing in France from Azerbaijan, Durov was taken into custody at the Paris-Le Bourget Airport. While confirming the arrest, French President Emmanuel Macron said that the arrest was not politically motivated. On August 26, Macron wrote on X, “The arrest of the president of Telegram on French soil took place as part of an ongoing judicial investigation. It is in no way a political decision.” 

Due to ban in India

There may be some major reasons behind the ban on Telegram in India:

  1. Lain of illegal activities: There are many illegal groups and channels operating on Telegram where drugs, weapons, and other illegal materials are traded. The Indian government has taken several steps to prevent these activities, but the encryption technology on Telegram has made it difficult to stop it completely.
  2. National Security: The secret chat feature on Telegram can be used by terrorist organizations and other illegal organizations. Due to this, India’s security agencies consider it a threat to national security.
  3. Data Protection: The Government of India is serious about data security, and many questions are being raised on Telegram regarding data storage and privacy policy. Concerns are being raised about the security of Indian users’ data on the app.

The Indian government has previously banned apps like TikTok, PUBG Mobile, which were due to national security and data privacy. Now there is talk of banning Telegram as well. If this happens, the move could prove to be a major setback for many users.
