Former Rep. Gabby Giffords, D-Arizona, on Thursday honored President Joe Biden, whom she called “a decent man of Delaware, and then urged Americans to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in November.
Giffords said, “On January 8, 2011, a man tried to kill me… I was almost dead, but I fought for my life, and I survived.” She referred to a mass shooting in Tucson when she was a Congress member.
He added, “A lot of people handled me when I worked hard to make my recovery, one of whom was a decent man, who always took my news. He still does that.”
“Thank you. Joe Biden, thank you for everything you have done,” Giffords continued, and said to the crowd, “Who is a great president. My friend Kamala will become a great president.”
In the first part of his speech, Giffords spoke about the patience he “had from birth,” and said he “spent his childhood in motorcycle racing, cleaning stalls, and exploring Arizona’s beautiful desert.”
Then, he praised Harris, saying, “Kamala is very strong; he has patience. Kamala can defeat the gun lobby. She can fight gun trafficking.” His speech came as the convention’s prime-time program had begun, with a focus on preventing gun violence.
In the first part of the program, Representative Lucy Macbeth, D-G., who lost her son to gun violence in 2012, shared the stage with other gun violence victims and activists.
In this context, Giffords presented Kamala Harris as a strong leader who can play a decisive role in the fight against gun violence and trafficking.
