
On the morning of August 17, 2024, a serious incident occurred at the Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland (JBSA-Lackland) in San Antonio, Texas. At about 4:30 a.m., a suspect opened fire at the main gate of the JBSA-Chapman Training Annex. The suspect was in a black sedan car and fired several bullets at the gate. Security forces deployed at the base retaliated, but the suspect fled from the spot with the car.
Immediately after the incident, the base was locked down and authorities surrounded the area. However, no one was injured nor was anyone arrested. According to officials, the suspect had no connection to the military base, and it has been termed an “off-base shooting”. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing, and normal operations have been restored.
The incident has raised concerns about the security of military bases, especially when it is unclear what the suspect’s intentions were. Such incidents are under stressing the need to further tighten security measures.
